Forest fires continue to ravage Spain, destroying thousands of hectares, claiming a tragic toll, and blocking key communication routes. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) informs that for safety reasons, 15 roads have already been closed in various regions of the country.

Most affected regions

The most disruptions have been recorded in Castile and León, Extremadura, and Galicia, although the fire has also led to road closures in Asturias and the Madrid region. The scale of the phenomenon is enormous – the element has already consumed over 350,000 hectares, equivalent to almost half a million football fields. The consequence is evacuations, orders to stay home, and lack of access to many localities.

Roads closed due to fire

The DGT confirmed the closure of 15 roads in various provinces:

In León:

  • N-621, LE-2703 (Portilla de la Reina)
  • LE-2711 (Retuerto)
  • LE-164 (Yebra)
  • LE-5228 (Salas de los Barrios)
  • LE-4212 (Cariseda)
  • LE-7311 (Nogar)

In Zamora:

  • N-525, ZA-103 (San Martín de Castañeda)
  • ZA-104 (Ribadelago)

In Cáceres:

  • CC-224 (Hervás)
  • CC-234 (Valdastillas)

In Ourense:

  • N-525 (A Gudiña)

In Asturias:

  • CO-4 (Covadonga)

In Madrid:

  • M-104 (Iberdrola)

Check the current road situation on the official DGT website.

Authorities urge avoiding travel through areas affected by the fires and their surroundings until further notice. The variable wind and rapid spread of the fire make the risk of moving in these regions very high.

Four fatalities

The tragic toll of the fires already includes four people. The latest victim is a firefighter who died in Espinoso de Compludo (Ponferrada, León). The tragedy occurred when the fire truck overturned on the way back from a firefighting operation in Yeres.
