TfL to charge motorists for use of Blackwall Tunnel

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that Blackwall Tunnel will be subject to a toll fee within the next couple of years.

The plans involve the introduction of a toll for the north and southbound routes under the river. The prices of the toll, which are due to be determined later when the toll is close to being introduced, will depend on the size of vehicle.

It is said that the toll introduction will coincide with the opening of the new Silvertown Tunnel, with the funds used from the Blackwell Tunnel toll used to recoup the money used to invest in the new tunnel.

Any additional funds left over from the toll revenues will then be used elsewhere to improve London’s transport network.

News of the toll being introduced comes following a number of obstructions to London trade that hauliers and couriers have faced in recent years. The Ultra Low Emissions Zone is set to be expanded in a fortnight, while mandatory DVS systems have also required firms to upgrade their vehicles or pay extra charges.

Those who drive within the expanded ULEZ with a vehicle that doesn’t meet the emissions standards could face a daily charge of £12.50. This includes residents of the ULEZ, stresses TfL.

Owners of non-UK registered vehicles also need to meet the ULEZ emissions standards or pay the daily charge to drive within the zone. Vehicles need to be registered with TfL partner EPC plc, even if they meet the emissions standards.
