The Swiss authorities want to introduce new legislation that would prevent lorries without specific safety systems to enter the tunnels and drive the passes. In this way, they want to increase road safety.

The Transport Commission at the Swiss National Council agreed to the initiative of the Canton Tessin under the name “Safe roads from now on!”. Its goal is to increase road safety by introducing further requirements for the equipment of trucks. The Swiss want trucks that travel on alpine passes and tunnels to be equipped with safety systems, such as:

– ABS,

– emergency braking assistant,

– stability control system,

– lane change assistant,

– tire pressure monitoring system.

Trucks without the aforementioned equipment will be subject to a traffic ban that will be introduced on these sections, reports the portal verkehrsrundschau.de.

The Transport Committee has a maximum of 2 years to implement the legislation.
