Toyota presented ‘Project Portal’, the concept of a truck which uses fuel cells already known from the Mirai model.

Toyota wants to verify whether the solution used in passenger cars will also work out.

As part of the ‘Project Portal’ Japanese designers, in collaboration with American engineers, will create an electric truck designed for use in the Los Angeles port.

Parameters of the new Toyota truck

There are already first prototypes of the vehicle. The electric engines powered with two sets of fuel cells have 670 HP and 1794 Nm maximum torque. Test trucks are equipped with batteries with capacity of 12 kWh.

According to the manufacturer, with such parameters Project Portal is able to carry up to 36 tonnes of goods. The vehicle range is 200 miles, that is approximately 321 km.

Toyota wants to promote “the engine of the future”

The hydrogen fuel cell technology has great potential as an engine of the future. From creating one of the world’s first mass market fuel cell vehicles, to introducing fuel cell buses in Japan, Toyota is a leader in expanding the use of versatile and scalable zero-emission technology” – said Bob Carter, the Vice President of Toyota Motor North America.

Trucks are the source of a large part of emissions produced by the Los Angeles port. Project Portal is the next step of Toyota, which wants to implement fuel cell technologies in a variety of industries and promote them in the automotive industry.

Activities which are part of Project Portal also include expansion of the California hydrogen refuelling station network.

Toyota cooperates with private and public sectors in order to create a sufficiently dense network of hydrogen refuelling stations in many parts of the world, including Europe and Japan.
