The Romanian authorities have changed the provisions of the Highway Code. From now on, drivers who are punished by the police should not pay a ticket directly to the law enforcement officer. The authorities want to eliminate the flow of cash between citizens and officers.

On August 24, changes in the Romanian traffic code came into force. The most important from the point of view of drivers is that you can no longer pay fines directly to the police. Instead, drivers in Romania can settle the ticket via bank transfer, post office or at any Romanian tax office.

The second change concerns the date of payment of half of the minimum penalty for traffic offenses. So far, the driver had 48 hours to do it. Now the deadline has been extended to 15 calendar days from the date when the ticket was issued. 15 days is also the time a punished driver has to appeal a fine if he thinks he got it unfairly.

How does it look in practice? For example, if the fine is 200 RON (approx. 43 euros), and the minimum amount required by law is 100 RON (approx. 21,5 euros), then the driver should pay half the minimum amount of 50 RON (approx. 11 euros) within 15 days. The rest must be paid within 30 days.
