At approximately 10.30pm, an inland shipping barge crashed into the bridge, causing some containers to fall into the canal

The impact also caused a part of the road surface to be torn and lifted up. As a result, a lorry that had been travelling on the bridge at the time ended up crashing into the tarmac that had just lifted up in front of its path.

The containers have since been recovered, and miraculously, the bridge has somehow avoided serious structural damage. As early as this morning at 5.30am, the police confirmed that the bridge had been reopened in both directions.

As for the driver of the lorry, he was naturally shocked by accident, but was unhurt and taken to hospital for a precautionary check-up.
