A German truck driver has been receiving unknown calls from senior citizens all week due to his phone number sharing 8 digits with the Rhine-Westphalia region’s coronavirus vaccine hotline.

Michael Schild, who comes from Dortmund, started receiving the calls at 8am on Monday, precisely when the hotline opened.

Schild told German TV Station WDR1 “All of a sudden, so many cell phone numbers flew onto my cell phone that I couldn’t deal with them at all”.

He eventually learned by taking some of the calls that people thought they had dialled the number for the Rhine-Westphalia region’s coronavirus vaccine hotline.

Despite the fact Michael has had to deal with an „infinite number” of unknown calls, the trucker appears to have kept his calm and still picks up the phone when he can.

The lorry driver said to WDR1 “An 80-year-old told me that he had been trying to get an appointment for 10 hours. I’ve tried to calm down the elderly and tell them that they will definitely get an appointment.”

Michael said the callers had “apologized umpteen times” and added „many of the conversations really moved me.”
