Two Polish lorry drivers have been injured at a French rest stop following a “violent attack” by a group of individuals armed with iron bars. Five persons have been arrested in connection with the attack.

According to French news channel France 3, the incident occured on Sunday evening.

It is reported that several masked individuals carrying weapons attacked HGV drivers at the Peage is Nimes rest stop outside Nîmes. It is suspected the attackers intended to steal cargo. The victims of the attack were reportedly hit with iron bars and wood. One of the truckers managed to escape, but unfortunately two were injured.

During recent high-profile incidents at rest areas, the apparently slow response of the emergency services has drawn criticism from lorry drivers. However, it appears on this occasion that the response was swift.

It is said that within minutes of the alarm being sounded, the suspects were arrested by officers in Nîmes. In total, 5 persons were arrested in connection with the attack; two who were directly involved and another 3 suspected of helping out with a getaway vehicle.

The five individuals were immediately taken into custody for questioning.

According to Nîmes Prosecutor Eric Maurel, the two lorry drivers were not only injured, but also understandably shocked by the incident.
