The aim of the move, says XPO Logistics, is to provide a more sustainable transport alternative by travelling 900 km by rail from Domodossola in Italy to Duisburg in Germany.
The new route mainly transports retail, food, and automotive components. In addition, the company saves about 1 ton of CO2 for each load carried. According to XPO, this is equivalent to the emissions saved by more than 14,600 trees in one day.
On the route, XPO shall also use P400 semi-trailers, which are linked by GPS to a control tower that monitors operations in real time. XPO states that this improves the efficiency of the service and offers greater precision and security to the customer.
Commenting on the announcement, Massimo Marsili, managing director – Southern Europe and Morocco, XPO Logistics, said:
“The launch of this new multimodal route between Italy and Germany is the result of our aim to provide operational excellence to all our customers, while maintaining a clear commitment to sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint”. XPO’s communication and capillarity are essential to provide this type of solution. Thanks to the collaboration of the XPO teams involved in the different countries, we can ensure the excellent operation of this multimodal route from beginning to end. “
