Named SFTL (the Social Fund for Transport and Logistics), the scheme is currently being publicised in Belgium to make would-be drivers aware of the free training available.
The scheme was previously targeted at early school leavers, but has now been opened up to everyone in the hope more drivers can be trained.
Geert Heylen, director of training at the SFTL, says he hopes professionals “who always dreamed of driving a truck, but were never able to obtain the corresponding driver’s license for various reasons” can take advantage of the free training.
To gain access to the training, prospective candidates can register online. They shall then undergo screening by the SFTL, who will check that the person is motivated and planning to find long-term work in the industry.
Candidates must be prepared to follow the training in addition to their regular job, with sessions taking place in the evenings or during the weekend. The lessons will be organised in collaboration with Federdrive, the federation of recognized Belgian driving schools.
