Kuehne+Nagel begins electric HGV operations in the UK

Kuehne+Nagel has begun operating electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) from Able Humber Port using Milence’s newly opened charging hub in Immingham — the first public charging site for electric trucks launched by Milence in the UK.

The charging hub features 400 kW CCS high-power chargers, with charging times currently ranging between 1 and 2.5 hours depending on vehicle specifications. According to the companies, a Megawatt Charging System (MCS) will be installed at the site in the near future, which is expected to reduce charging times to approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

The collaboration is part of wider efforts to test and scale electric HGV operations in the UK. Kuehne+Nagel is participating in the eFREIGHT 2030 programme, one of the UK Government’s ‘Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator’ initiatives. As part of the programme, the company is supplying real-world operational data, including telematics, driver experiences, and cost of ownership insights.

“Alongside supportive measures to scale depot charging – such as faster access to grid connections and enabling policy measures – we also need high-performance, reliable and cost-effective public charging hubs,” said Kate Broome, Sustainability and Social Impact Director at Kuehne+Nagel UK.

Milence, a joint venture between Daimler Truck, Traton Group, and Volvo Group, is developing a Europe-wide public charging network for electric trucks. The company says it currently operates over 20 hubs across the continent.

The Immingham facility contributes to ongoing efforts to establish green corridors for electric freight and is being used to inform future planning of strategic charging locations based on operational data.

Public charging infrastructure is regarded by the industry as a key barrier to large-scale electrification of road freight, particularly in long-haul operations. The deployment of high-power and MCS chargers is expected to play a central role in overcoming these constraints.
