Padborg inspection leads to €200,000 in fines for weekly rest spent in lorry cabs

Southeast Jutland Police have revealed that in one mere inspection at a lorry park near the border with Germany, as many as 50 drivers were found to have violated the ban on spending weekly rest in the cab.

The inspection took place on Sunday 10th September at a lorry park in Padborg.

“Prior to the auction, there were several indications that lorry drivers used the space for regular weekly rest, even though lorry drivers must take a longer break outside the lorry once a week. This led to an investigation, and as a follow-up to that, a major check was planned,” says Tungvognscenter Syd, the regional road traffic police department.

According to the police, the inspection took place without any drama, and most drivers quickly understood that they were staying in their cabs at a time when they were not supposed to be.

A total of 50 drivers were fined, none of which were Danish. Only three of the vehicle belonged to Danish hauliers.

The value of the fine for illegally taking regular weekly rest in the vehicle is DKK 10,000 (roughly €1,340) for the driver and DKK 20,000 (around €2,680) for the company.

During this particular inspection, fines totaling DKK 1.5 million were issued (approximately €201,000).

The vast majority of fines have already been recovered, says the police. In the remaining few cases, the vehicles have been impounded until the fine is paid.
