Haulier fined €2,000 after leaving truckers stranded over failure to replace defective tyres

Germany's Oldenburg Police Department has said it will continue to monitor the situation regarding two Brazilian HGV drivers that have been stranded at a rest area in Germany. The duo were prevented from continuing their journey due to their vehicle's defective tyres, but have been unable to move on due to their employer failing to order replacement tyres.

In a press statement, Oldenburg Police explained that on May 9th, a HGV and its two drivers were subject to an inspection by BALM (formerly the BAG).

The vehicle inspectorate discovered tyre defects, and ordered that vehicle could not continue its journey until the tyres had been replaced.

During a subsequent check at the same rest stop over a week later, the officers were surprised to see the same lorry and its drivers.

It turned out the drivers’ Portuguese employer had seemingly done nothing about the defective tyres, preventing the truckers from moving on.

The Portuguese haulier’s failure to replace the tyres has nonetheless come at a cost. As the drivers had to spend their weekly rest in the cab, and were not offered accommodation, the company was fined €2,000.

The police offered the drivers a lift to the train station, but the two Brazilians declined the offer. Officers have said they will be keeping an eye on the situation to see if the drivers remain stranded.
