70 HGV drivers fined in Germany for spending the weekly rest in the cab

Seventy drivers were fined by German road freight inspectors in Germany in June for spending their 45-hour rest period in the cabin. During all the inspections last month, the inspectors managed to pocket over 150 thousand euros from fines imposed for violations of drivers' hours and cabotage rules or technical defects.

The figures come from the BAG’s latest monthly summary of its work. According to the data, inspectors carried out weekend controls three times focusing on illegal cabotage, weekly rest in the cabin and roadworthiness. The checks yielded 157,606 euros in fine deposits.

The first major inspection took place on the weekend of 6-7 June – on this occasion, a total of 363 vehicles were inspected. Of this number, 343 vehicles were checked for compliance with weekly rest period rules. An additional 154 vehicles were checked for compliance with cabotage regulations.

With regards to the ban on spending weekly rest in the cab, 67 violations were detected. Three cabotage violations were also punished with fines, while 18 vehicles were penalized as a result of technical defects.

During the second weekend of inspections, on June 14 and 15, a total of 872 vehicles were inspected. On this occasion, 864 vehicles were checked for compliance with cabotage regulations. 87 vehicles were checked regarding compliance with weekly rest periods, while 30 vehicles were inspected for technical issues.

17 vehicles were reported for cabotage violations. However, inspectors did not find any violations regarding the weekly rest times, nor were there any technical defects.

Finally, a total of 806 vehicles were inspected on June 23 and 24, of which 772 vehicles were inspected for compliance with cabotage regulations. 87 vehicles were inspected for compliance with the regular weekly rest period, and technical inspections were performed on 26 vehicles.

24 vehicles were reported for cabotage offences and three drivers were fined for spending their 45-hour rest period in the cab. No fines could be issued for technical issues.
