Soon it will probably be decided that an 18 km tunnel connecting Denmark with Germany will be created. The investment costs are estimated at 7 billion euro.
The road with two lanes in each direction and a double-track railway line will run under the Fehmarn Belt Strait, between the German island of Fehmarn and the Danish island of Lolland. This will be the longest such transport corridor in the World. The travel time on this route will be approx. 10 minutes by car and 7 minutes by train. Right now you have to wait even 45 minutes for the ferry.
Danes have already signed an agreement with Germany on the implementation of the project. Currently the only obstacle is the lack of permission to build on the German side. The Danish side has already received such permission. According to the rynekinfrastruktury.pl website our Western neighbours are afraid of losing their jobs as a result of the decommissioning of the ferry crossings which are very popular.
