The Dutch road, water and rail infrastructure is among the most heavily used in Europe. Many of the bridges, locks, viaducts and tunnels were built in the 1950s and 1960s. Over time, their technical condition has deteriorated, and with the rapidly growing number of users, it has become necessary to carry out major repairs and modernisation.
This year and the coming months, among others, works are planned on key sections of the A1, A4 and A10 motorways (Amsterdam Ring Road) . The modernisation of surfaces and engineering structures will improve capacity and safety, but will also be associated with temporary inconveniences for drivers.
Obstacles and detours – what you need to know
The works will be carried out from May to October 2025 , and the related road closures and detours will affect both local and transit traffic. Rijkswaterstaat recommends that drivers prepare accordingly, e.g. by planning their journey outside rush hours.
The largest investments will be concentrated around Amsterdam.
Renovation and closure of A1
The A1 motorway from the Watergraafsmeer junction to the Diemen junction will be closed from 9 to 26 May 2025. Traffic will be diverted to the A2/A9 motorway during the closure. Drivers should expect an additional driving time of 30 to 60 minutes .
Rijkswaterstaat emphasises that the following closures apply on the diversion routes (A9/A2):
- exit road S111 towards Almere/Hengelo,
- exit S112 towards Bijlmermeer/Gaasperdam,
- exit S111 from A2 from Amsterdam,
- Almere-Amsterdam junction.
The S111 exit from the A2 coming from Utrecht and the A9 Badhoevedorp will be available, as will the Amsterdam-Almere junction.

Works on the Amsterdam ring road
The work on the A10 route between the Watergraafsmeer and Amstel junctions in Amsterdam will be carried out in two stages – the first from 26 June to 12 July , and the second from 19 September to 6 October . During the work, a section of the motorway will be completely closed . The detour will run along the A9 motorway, and drivers will have to add 30 to 60 minutes to their journey.
A4 renovation only in July
The renovation of the A4 motorway will begin during the summer. The first stage will last from July 11 to 24. At that time, the renovated section of the road south of Amsterdam will be restricted to one lane in each direction and a speed limit of 70 km/h will apply. The next stage of work from July 24 to August 5 will also be carried out with the road narrowed to one lane and a speed limit of 70 km/h. Rijkswaterstaat, however, reserves that the schedule of works may still change.
