April truck driving bans: where and when they will apply

In April, due to the Easter holidays, truck driving bans will be in force in most European countries.

In addition to the regular weekend and night-time driving bans, many countries will also introduce holiday restrictions related to Easter. 

The main restrictions are as follows:

2 April (Maundy Thursday)

Austria – from 7:00 to 22:00. The ban applies to the A12 Inntal motorway, A13 Brenner and A14 Rheintal/Walgau if the destination is the A13 section between the Nößlach and Brenner Nord interchanges towards the state border with Italy. The restrictions apply to trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 t.

Luxembourg – from 23:30 to 24:00 for traffic towards Germany. The restrictions apply to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 t, with or without a trailer.

Hungary – from 22:00 to 24:00. Restrictions in Hungary apply to trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 t.

3 April (Good Friday)

Croatia – from 15:00 to 23:00. In this country, the ban covers trucks and combinations with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 t, as well as trucks and vehicles with trailers exceeding 14 m in length.

Czechia – from 13:00 to 22:00. The ban applies to trucks and combinations with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 t.

Luxembourg – from 0:00 to 21:45 towards Germany.

Germany – from 0:00 to 22:00. During this time, trucks with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 7.5 t and trucks with trailers may not travel on German roads.

Slovakia – from 0:00 to 22:00. Driving bans on Slovak roads apply to trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 t and to trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t with a trailer or semi-trailer.

The Presidium of the Slovak Police introduced a partial exemption from traffic restrictions for heavy goods vehicles on the public holiday on 3 April 2026, but it applies only in the morning, not throughout the day. Trucks over 7.5 tonnes carrying out international transport and heading to a destination in Slovakia, e.g. a Slovak waste landfill, may travel freely on motorways and national roads between 00:00 and 06:00 on that day. Similar exemptions also apply on other public holidays.

Slovenia – from 14:00 to 22:00. The restriction applies to trucks and vehicle combinations with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 7.5 t.

Switzerland – from 0:00 to 24:00. Swiss bans cover trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t.

Hungary – from 0:00 to 22:00. 

Italy – from 14:00 to 22:00. In Italy, restrictions apply to trucks over 7.5 tonnes.

4 April (Holy Saturday)

Austria – from 15:00 to 24:00. In Austria, the restriction applies to tractor units with trailers where the gross vehicle weight of the tractor unit or trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes, as well as to trucks, articulated vehicles or self-propelled industrial machinery with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 tonnes.  

Croatia – from 15:00 to 23:00. 

France – from 22:00 to 24:00. French restrictions cover trucks and vehicle combinations with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 tonnes. 

Luxembourg – from 21:30 to 24:00 towards France and from 23:30 to 24:00 towards Germany.

Poland – from 18:00 to 22:00. In Poland, restrictions apply to vehicles over 12 tonnes.

Hungary – from 22:00 to 24:00.

Italy – from 9:00 to 16:00.

5 April (Easter Sunday)

Austria – from 0:00 to 22:00. 

Croatia – from 14:00 to 23:00.

Czechia – from 13:00 to 22:00.

France – from 0:00 to 24:00.

Luxembourg – from 0:00 to 24:00 towards France and from 0:00 to 21:45 and from 23:30 to 24:00 towards Germany.

Germany – from 0:00 to 22:00.

Poland – from 8:00 to 22:00.

Slovakia – from 0:00 to 22:00.

Slovenia – from 8:00 to 22:00.

Switzerland – from 0:00 to 24:00.
