“Unfortunately, the current traffic figures show a steady increase in heavy traffic on the road,” says Governor Günther Platter (ÖVP) in his justification. “This February, for example, resulted in the highest truck numbers ever recorded in the comparable period of previous years.” The block handling days now specified were defined by traffic experts in order to counteract traffic congestion.
Deputy Governor and Transport Minister Ingrid Felipe, of the Green Party, also points out that truck traffic in Tyrol has increased sharply in the last year and has almost reach pre-pandemic levels.
The block handling will be in effect on days whereby above-average traffic levels are expected due to public holidays in Germany, Italy and Austria. In the previous year, block handling was carried out on 41 days and in 2020 it was only 24 due to the pandemic.
