Today’s headline story: Transport for London launches cargo bike action plan
Transport for London (TfL) has launched a cargo bike action plan to increase the use of cargo bikes for last-mile deliveries in London.
Currently, around 90% of goods in London are transported by road, primarily in vans or lorries, which contributes to congestion and emissions.
The plan is designed to ensure an increasing number of deliveries are made using light commercial vehicles, with a focus on cargo e-bikes. TfL’s analysis shows that cargo e-bikes could replace up to 17% of van mileage in central London by 2030, representing a saving of around 30,000 tonnes of CO2.
The plan covers various aspects of how cargo bike use should be encouraged in London, including developing new cargo bike guidance, collecting safety data, promoting the use of cargo bikes in low-traffic neighbourhoods and boroughs with emissions reduction schemes, and exploring ways to develop micro mobility hubs and parking areas to support the machines.
