Freightliner will continue to operate as a standalone, multi-user, multi-customer intermodal rail freight operator within the UK, retaining operational autonomy while becoming part of CMA CGM’s global logistics group. According to industry reporting, the acquisition covers Freightliner’s UK intermodal and logistics activities, including 10 terminals, around 1.4 million rail slots, approximately 2,000 wagons, and one of the UK’s largest fleets of electric locomotives.

Businesses previously part of the wider Freightliner Group but excluded from the transaction—including Heavy Haul Rail and European operations such as Rotterdam Rail Feeding and Freightliner’s Polish and German units—will continue to operate independently under their existing ownership structures.

Industry analysts describe the completed acquisition as a strategic step in CMA CGM’s broader push to strengthen rail-based and inland logistics capabilities in Europe, complementing its maritime and road freight operations and supporting a modal shift towards lower-emission transport solutions.
