A Colchester Councillor has accused supermarket chain Iceland of receiving deliveries at its Turner Rise Retail Park earlier than it is permitted to do so, causing local residents sleep deprivation in the process.

As the Colchester Gazette reports, Iceland are permitted to receive deliveries from 7am to 11pm Monday-Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

However, the supermarket chain are accused of regularly taking deliveries outwith this time. As a result, Colchester Council says it is even considering legal action to try and stop the early deliveries.

Iceland have been sent a planning enforcement notice by the council.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Martin Goss told the Colchester Gazette that the council “mean business” as far as the legal action is concerned:

“They have carried on doing it and seem to have completely ignored the notice. We are gathering evidence to take it to court and that is what will happen if it isn’t sorted. We mean business because it has been going on for a long time.

Goss also told the Gazette that Home Bargains, who have a branch in the same retail park, are being investigated too.

The reason behind all the fuss is the number of complaints from residents of Peto Avenue, which runs parallel to the retail park. According to Goss, the HGV deliveries are causing sleep deprivation:

“The Iceland deliveries are disturbing residents when they should be asleep. It is causing some residents sleep deprivation. At the end of the day Iceland are a huge brand which should know better than this. They say ‘mums go to Iceland’ but I certainly won’t be visiting until this is sorted.”
