Spike in winter-related breakdowns triggers manufacturer warning

DAF Trucks has urged fleet operators to intensify winter vehicle preparation and carry out thorough daily maintenance checks, warning that many cold-weather breakdowns are preventable with proper precautions.

The call comes amid increased demand for roadside assistance during winter conditions, according to the manufacturer’s UK organisation. DAF says colder temperatures place additional strain on key vehicle components, increasing the risk of failures if vehicles are not adequately prepared.

According to the company, common winter-related issues include reduced tyre pressures, battery failures, problems with antifreeze levels in cooling systems, diesel fuel waxing in low temperatures, and moisture affecting air systems. These faults, DAF notes, can often be avoided through systematic winterisation and regular inspections.

DAF advises operators to ensure that daily walk-around checks cover tyres, lighting, batteries, air systems, AdBlue levels, and windscreen washers and wipers. The manufacturer also recommends that vehicles carry appropriate winter equipment and that fleets confirm fuel and fluid specifications are suitable for cold conditions.

The company stresses that preventative maintenance is particularly important during prolonged periods of low temperatures, as winter breakdowns can lead to delays, higher operating costs, and safety risks for drivers and other road users.
