A new deep water bulk berth has been opened at the Port of Liverpool, marking the first such development at the port in four decades. The berth, located at Peel Ports Group’s Alexandra Complex, is expected to enhance cargo handling operations and increase vessel capacity.
The facility represents a £2 million investment by Peel Ports as part of ongoing developments at the Alexandra Complex. The berth received its first vessel, the Andesborg, on Friday and is designed to accommodate ships up to handymax sizes.
The addition of the new berth, alongside the existing N3 Alex berth, is set to increase the vessel handling capacity of both the Alexandra Complex and the Port of Liverpool overall. The Alexandra Complex spans 534,000 square feet and recently saw the development of a £28 million state-of-the-art warehouse, aimed at improving bulk storage and handling services.
Phill Hall, Mersey Port Director at Peel Ports Group, described the opening as a significant development for the port. He noted that the berth would not only accommodate larger vessels but also enhance the efficiency of bulk cargo management, contributing to supply chain operations.
“This project demonstrates our commitment to investing in infrastructure,” Hall said. “With modern storage facilities and the new berth, we can handle a diverse range of commodities and better support customers.”
