The NHS recommends that most people have their eyes tested every two years to ensure they have the right contact lenses or glasses prescribed if necessary.

Eyesight is of course vital for drivers, especially those who drive professionally.

The Lenstore survey found that 50% of all drivers were not following NHS guidance.

This figure rose to 69% for lorry and bus drivers. 16% of the lorry and bus drivers surveyed have not had an eye test at all.

Lenstore says that short-sightedness was the most common eyesight issue, impacting almost a quarter of drivers (23%). This was followed by long-sightedness (19%), floaters (18%) and dry eyes (16%).

Regionally, among all motorists, drivers in Belfast were the worst offenders – 73% had not had an eye test in the last two years. Manchester and Bristol had the equal-second-highest percentage, both scoring 52%.
