According to Forto, its transports use only second-generation biofuels produced from sustainable waste streams such as used cooking oil.
As with green electricity, the emission reduction is achieved on another vessel and allocated to customers interested in reducing emissions.
The correct allocation is verified by independent auditors. By opting for biofuel, Forto says Lupriflex is stimulating demand for sustainable solutions in transport logistics and accelerating the industry’s transformation.
Lupriflex containers will be shipped from China to Germany and Belgium.
Forto orchestrates sea and rail transport from the port of loading to the warehouse, including customs and transit clearance, fiscal duty processing and onward trucking. In June 2023, the company delivered the first 40-foot container booked with biofuel to the shoe manufacturer’s headquarters in Haltern am See.
In a statement regarding the biofuel announcement, as well as the recent IMO targets, a Forto spokesperson said:
“We are happy to see that, after meeting in London this week, the IMO agreed to upgrade its previous target of halving global GHG emissions from shipping by 2050 compared to 2008 to reach net zero “by or around, i.e., close to 2050, taking into account different national circumstances. With freight transport accounting for 8% of global emissions, sustainability is a responsibility, not a choice. “
The spokesperson added:
“Forto is taking responsibility by committing to 1.5 degree Science Based Targets, creating transparency on emissions and reducing emissions through the use of biofuels today. While we hoped for the IMO to set science based targets in line with the Paris Agreement, we are confident that ambitious industry actors will drive the sustainability transformation regardless of insufficient global legislation and targets. Considering that 70% of our customers are already taking climate action with us today, Forto is confident that the logistics industry is changing and will continue on this sustainability journey.”
