The A40 near Bochum will remain closed longer than initially planned. This section of the motorway, between the Harpen and Westkreuz junctions, was fully closed in both directions on 6 August and was originally scheduled to reopen in mid-November.

This week, however, the German motorway authority, Autobahn GmbH, announced that the works will be extended by approximately three weeks. The road is now expected to reopen to traffic on the second weekend of December (7-8 December), provided that the weather is favourable and allows for the completion of remaining tasks, such as roadway marking.

Detours

As a reminder, traffic has been diverted along the A448 motorway route south of Bochum during the A40 closure. For drivers travelling from Essen towards Dortmund, the detour begins at the Bochum West junction, continues onto the A448, then connects to the A43 at the Bochum/Witten junction before returning to the A40 at the Bochum junction. For those travelling from Dortmund towards Essen, the detour follows the same route in reverse.
