The German Federal Office for Goods Transport is to investigate allegations that a Polish haulier made its driver spend Christmas in his cabin at a rest stop near Hermsdorf, just off the A4 motorway.

The police were alerted to the situation after a spotting a Belarusian lorry driver wandering around the rest stop’s petrol station in a drunken state. Indeed, the 38-year-old was so drunk that he required medical attention, reports tag24.de.

Further investigations by the police revealed that a Polish road transport company had kept the driver in limbo since December 23rd. He was allegedly told to spend his rest period in the cabin at a rest area just off the motorway, which is contrary to the regulations.

The road transport company now faces a four-digit fine (in euros) as a punishment. The haulier has since been informed of the initiated legal proceedings, and was instructed to send a replacement driver to pick up the truck and bring the employee home.
