BGL, German transport union and trade unions, quoting the expertise of a lawyer, want to introduce a minimum wage for drivers travelling in transit. ZMPD calls it an attempt to shatter the EU unity and a pre-election game.
On Monday “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” magazine informed about the expertise prepared for the Federation of German Trade Unions (DGB) and the Federal Union of Goods Transport (BGL) by Hamburg expert, Peter Mankowski.
According to Mankowski, a driver passing through Germany in transit “undertakes an economic activity even if they are in a traffic jam which means that it is subject to the provision on the minimum wage” – we can read in FAZ.
According to him, the minimum wage applies to all employees in the country and applying it to drivers in transit does not constitute an infringement of the EU freedom to provide services.
DGB and BGL have been trying to include the Eastern European drivers transiting Germany in the minimum wage provisions. According to the unions their exclusion from the law is “a dumping” which is used by Eastern European carriers to benefit. The minimum wage is currently 8.84 Euros per hour.
