Germany introduces yet more border controls

France’s eastern Moselle region is now on Germany’s “variant of concern” areas list, which means that stricter border controls will be implemented from tomorrow.

The new restrictions are similar to those currently in place in Austria’s Tyrol region and the Czech Republic, albeit less strict. Lorry drivers are among those still permitted to cross the border into Germany, and fortunately, they will not have present negative coronavirus tests as it stands.

The Moselle area was added to the list after a spike in coronavirus cases in the region, thought to be caused by new variants.

The checks are likely to infuriate the road transport industry, who have already had to deal with mandatory covid testing for a number of border crossings since the emergence of new variants in December.
