The average truckers’ pay in Germany remains stable. Drivers’ earnings depend on experience, region, and the specifics of the job performed. It is worth noting that differences between individual federal states can amount to several thousand euros per year, and length of service remains one of the key factors shaping pay levels.
The average salary is €36,000 (£30,600) per year
According to StepStone.de data, the average annual salary of a truck driver in Germany is €36,000 gross (£30,600), corresponding to approximately €3,000 gross per month (£2,550) on a 40-hour workweek.
However, the pay range is clearly wide. The lowest salaries start at €29,900 per year (£25,415), or approximately €2,491 per month (£2,117), while the highest reach €42,200 gross (£35,870), i.e. approximately €3,561 per month (£3,027). The platform also indicates an indicative hourly rate of €12 (£10.20), emphasising that it is part of a more complex pay system and may vary based on overtime hours, sector, or allowances.
Currently, the portal lists 7,492 job offers for truck drivers. The highest demand is visible, among others, in Münster, Düsseldorf and Essen.
Experience is still valued
The salary analysis shows a clear relationship between work experience and pay level. Drivers starting their career in the profession, with less than one year of experience, can expect around €35,200 gross per year (£29,920). After 1–2 years, the average salary rises to €35,904 (£30,518), and with 3–5 years of experience it reaches €38,776 (£32,960).
With 6–10 years of experience, earnings average €40,327 per year (£34,278), while in the 11–25 year range they amount to €41,940 (£35,649). The highest average pay, reaching €42,779 per year (£36,362), is earned by drivers with more than 25 years of experience.
These figures confirm that, under the German pay model, experience continues to translate into a steady increase in income.
Geography matters
Regional differences remain an important element of the remuneration system. The highest average salaries are recorded in Bavaria – €37,200 per year (£31,620) – and in Baden-Württemberg – €36,400 (£30,940). In Hesse, the average is €36,000 (£30,600).
At the other end of the spectrum are the eastern federal states. In Thuringia, drivers earn an average of €29,500 per year (£25,075), in Saxony €30,000 (£25,500), and in Saxony-Anhalt €30,500 (£25,925).
Differences are also visible at the city level. In Stuttgart, the average salary is €41,000 per year (£34,850); in Hamburg €37,600 (£31,960); in Bonn €37,200 (£31,620); and in Düsseldorf and Duisburg €37,100 (£31,535) each.
