Higher fines and expansion of toll roads in Hungary soon

There are serious changes coming to road toll payment in Hungary: from 16 August, toll fees will change and from 1 September, while the list of toll roads will also be extended, warns National Toll Payment Services Ltd.

From 16th August 2024, a Hungarian government decree will amend the fines associated with unauthorised road use.

The revised fines, determined according to vehicle categories and the duration following a penalty event, are as follows:

The categories are defined as follows:

  • J2 includes two-axle vehicles, 
  • J3 includes three-axle vehicles, 
  • J4 includes four-axle vehicles, 
  • and J5 includes vehicles with five or more axles.

Moreover, the Hungarian government has announced significant amendments to the toll regulations in Hungary, effective from 1st September 2024. These changes, outlined in the Minister of Construction and Transport’s Regulation 23/2024 (VII. 31.) and building on the earlier Regulation 25/2013, will impact vehicles with a maximum permissible total weight of over 3.5 tonnes.

The main changes are that new sections of road will be included in the toll payment system and the toll boundaries of some existing sections will be changed. 

The new toll sections to be included from 1st September 2024 are:

  • M6 motorway: section between Mohács and Lippó (km 191-208, 16.5 km)
  • M44 motorway: section between Szentkirály and Lakitelek (km 24-30, 5.5 km)
  • Main road 23: bypass around Bátonyterenye (km 0-2, 2 km)
  • Main road 260: Sajószentpéter–Berente bypass section (km 0-10, 10 km)
  • Main road 451: section between Szentes and Orosháza (km 46-77, 22.5 km)
  • Main road 512: section between the M6 motorway and Kalocsa (km 0-17, 17 km)

Additionally, technical amendments necessary for the automatic inflation tracking of the basic infrastructure fee rate will be implemented.
