Holiday lorry bans: check where they apply

Summer driving bans are currently in force in several European countries, but restrictions will start in most countries in July. Check out what the restrictions are in each country and when they apply.

Austria – Tyrol

In Tyrol, specific districts including Innsbruck, Innsbruck Land, Kufstein, Imst, and Reutte have implemented motorway exit bans to manage alternative traffic during congestion on main routes.

Traffic bans in Tyrol are effective as follows:

  • Innsbruck County: every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday from May 9 to October 13 this year, and also on October 3.
  • Innsbruck City: every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday from May 9 to October 13 this year.
  • Imst District: Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from July 6 to September 8, and on October 3, 5, and 6 this year.
  • Reutte District: Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from July 6 to September 8, and on October 3, 5, and 6.
  • Kufstein District: Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from July 6 to September 8 this year.

These bans apply to all vehicles using lower-level road networks as alternative routes, with exceptions for destination, source, and local traffic.

Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, summer traffic bans apply to lorries and vehicle combinations with a maximum weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes, from July 1 to August 31. The bans cover motorways, expressways, and primary roads:

  • Fridays from 17:00 to 21:00,
  • Saturdays from 07:00 to 13:00,
  • Sundays and other summer holidays from 13:00 to 22:00.

France

Traffic bans in France apply to lorries and vehicle combinations over 7.5 tonnes (excluding special and agricultural vehicles). This year, summer restrictions are in place from 07:00 to 19:00 on the following Saturdays: July 6, 20, 27 and August 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2024.

Germany

From July 1 to August 31, trucks over 7.5 tonnes are prohibited from certain motorways and trunk roads in Germany on Saturdays from 07:00 to 20:00. Restrictions apply to trucks and trailers used for commercial goods transport.

Hungary

In June 2024, restrictions on the movement of heavy goods vehicles exceeding the 7.5-tonne gross vehicle weight limit in the country will apply on Saturdays from 22:00 to 24:00 and on Sundays from 00:00 to 22:00.

On June weekends, the restriction applies to both Hungarian and foreign trucks. During the truck stop, it is not possible to drive from the state border to the base, as this exemption only applies in July and August each year, emphasizes the Hungarian transport organisation MKFE.

Throughout July and August, there will be restrictions on the movement of vehicles over 7.5 tonnes in Hungary on the following days:

  • From Saturday at 15:00 to Sunday at 22:00.
  • From 22:00 on the eve of a public holiday until 22:00 on the day of the holiday.

Hungarian traffic bans apply to the following routes:

  • M7 motorway.
  • National road 2, Budapest-Parassapuszta.
  • Trunk road 2A.
  • National road 6, Dunaújváros-Budapest.
  • National road 7.
  • National road 10, Dorog-Budapest.
  • National road 11, Esztergom-Budapest.
  • National road 12.
  • National road 1201.
  • National road 51 from the junction with national road 510 to Dömsöd.
  • National road 71.
  • National road 76 between the junction of national road 71 and road 7, and between Zalaapáti and national road 71.
  • National road 55, Alsónyék-Baja.
  • National road 82 from national road 8 to Veszprémvarsány.
  • National road 84 from Sümeg to national road 71.
  • National road 33, Dormánd-Debrecen.
  • National road 86, Jánossomorja-Nemesbőd and Körmend-Zalabaksa.
  • National road 37, Miskolc-Sátoraljaújhely from the junction of national road 38 to the junction with national road 37 to Rakamaz.

Italy

During summer in Italy, traffic bans for trucks over 7.5 tonnes apply on:

  • July 6 (Saturday) from 08:00 to 16:00,
  • July 13 (Saturday) from 08:00 to 16:00,
  • July 20 (Saturday) from 08:00 to 16:00,
  • July 26 (Friday) from 16:00 to 22:00,
  • July 27 (Saturday) from 08:00 to 16:00,
  • August 2 (Friday) from 16:00 to 22:00,
  • August 3 (Saturday) from 08:00 to 22:00,
  • August 9 (Friday) from 16:00 to 22:00,
  • August 10 (Saturday) from 08:00 to 22:00,
  • August 15 (Thursday) from 07:00 to 22:00,
  • August 17 (Saturday) from 08:00 to 16:00,
  • August 24 (Saturday) from 08:00 to 16:00,
  • August 31 (Saturday) from 08:00 to 16:00.

Poland

In Poland, vehicles and combinations of heavy goods vehicles exceeding a maximum permissible weight of 12 tonnes are subject to summer traffic bans. These bans are effective:

  • Fridays from 18:00 to 22:00,
  • Saturdays from 08:00 to 14:00,
  • Sundays from 08:00 to 22:00.

The truck ban starts from the end of the school year, this year from June 21 (next Friday), and continues until the last Sunday before the start of school classes, i.e., until September 1.

Slovakia

From July 1 to August 31, restrictions apply to vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes on Saturdays from 07:00 to 19:00.
