Like a number of national postal operators, France’s La Poste is dealing with a loss in the number of letters being sent. In order to use up excess capacity among its fleet and driving staff, the company has launched a pothole-checking service.

As Les Parisien reports, special cameras have been mounted on top of La Poste vans in order to scan roads and inform local authorities where repairs are required.

The equipment can be activated with the push of the button, making it simple for drivers to do a route or two during their spare time not delivering mail.

While it remains to be seen how much business the service will attract, the move by La Poste is arguably an example of how national postal operators are having to get creative to best utilise their fleets.
