Half of Dutch consumers prioritize environment in online shopping, a new report has found.

In a recent study conducted by Descartes, an annual survey of consumer sentiment regarding e-commerce home delivery, it was revealed that approximately half of the Dutch consumers are increasingly considering the environmental impact of their online purchases.

The research involved 8,000 participants from Europe and North America, including 500 consumers from the Netherlands.

The figures show that nearly half (49 per cent) of Dutch consumers surveyed take environmental factors into account when making a purchase. This percentage rises to over 60 per cent among younger demographic groups.

A significant portion (33 per cent) of Dutch consumers expressed a desire to identify the most eco-friendly delivery option available. Additionally, 30 per cent of respondents showed interest in consolidating multiple orders for combined delivery at the end of the week.

At the same time, the study anticipates an increase in home deliveries: almost half of Dutch consumers (46 per cent) reported maintaining the same level of online shopping activity as a year ago. However, 47 per cent expect to have a larger proportion of their purchases delivered to their homes in the future.

While people are planning to have more purchases delivered home, many of them expressed dissatisfaction with the deliveries: more than two-thirds (67 per cent) of Dutch consumers experienced delivery-related issues within a three-month period.

The three most common problems were untimely deliveries (at a different time or significantly delayed), with 23 per cent and 21 per cent respectively, and deliveries not aligning with the consumer’s preferred time (19 per cent). Interestingly, 38 per cent of respondents prioritized receiving deliveries at an exact time over speedy delivery.
