Maritime Transport places largest UK order for Volvo FH Aero lorries

Maritime Transport has made the largest UK order to date for Volvo FH Aero lorries, securing 150 units as part of an initiative to enhance fleet efficiency and sustainability. The new trucks are set to bolster Maritime’s existing fleet, with 20 already in operation across the company’s 41 sites, including several key rail freight terminals.

The new Volvo FH Aero lorries, designed to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, feature an extended cab that is 24 centimetres longer than the standard model. This aerodynamic design, combined with advanced technologies, is expected to reduce energy consumption and emissions by up to five per cent.

The vehicles are powered by Euro 6-compliant D13TC Step E engines, which use turbo compound technology to improve fuel efficiency. This technology involves an extra turbine that captures excess energy from exhaust gases and converts it into additional torque, enhancing overall engine performance.

Maritime Transport’s decision to expand its fleet with these new lorries aligns with its broader environmental strategy, which includes the planned introduction of battery-electric vehicles from Volvo Trucks in early 2025.

The new FH Aero trucks also include Volvo’s Camera Monitoring System (CMS), which replaces traditional exterior mirrors with cameras, improving both aerodynamic efficiency and driver visibility. Additional safety features include Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Driver Alert Support systems.

The lorries will be deployed within Maritime’s intermodal and distribution divisions, operating around the clock and expected to cover approximately 160,000 kilometres annually.
