National Lorry Week is highlighting the range of career routes available in road transport, with the Road Haulage Association pointing to two young traffic planners at John Mitchell Haulage and Warehousing as examples of how people can enter the sector through apprenticeships.

The RHA said this year’s campaign focuses on the people and careers behind the UK’s road transport industry, not only the drivers seen on the road.

At John Mitchell Haulage and Warehousing in Grangemouth, Lewis Newlands and Luke Dougall both moved into traffic planning roles after completing the RHA’s Logistics Operations apprenticeship.

Lewis joined the company in 2021 after working night shifts at Asda during the Covid pandemic, while Luke entered logistics from a kitchen job. Both now help coordinate freight movements, deal with customers and schedules, and respond to day-to-day operational issues.

According to the RHA, both have also completed their Transport Manager CPC qualification, giving them further career options in the sector.

John Mitchell Haulage and Warehousing provides haulage, warehousing and container services and was acquired by Gregory Group in March 2025.
