The inspection centre, located on the A22 motorway in Vipiteno, in the Italian province of Bolzano, is expected to be fully operational by the summer of 2025. Once completed, it will provide comprehensive inspections of commercial vehicles.

The facility will be used by agents from the Motor Vehicles Office (responsible for technical and administrative controls concerning compliance with civil transport regulations), traffic police, and the tax office. Their goal will be to monitor, among other things, the manipulation of control devices and adherence to environmental standards. The centre aims to enhance road safety and reduce air pollution on one of Europe’s busiest transit routes.

“Thanks to the new control centre at the entrance to the province of Bolzano, we can ensure that vehicles in transit comply with regulations. Here, we will be able to verify whether vehicles are not overloaded and have fully functional braking systems. Additionally, we can check what is being transported and whether all relevant regulations are being respected,” explained Arno Kompatscher, head of the government of the autonomous province of Bolzano, as quoted by the Italian news agency ANSA.

The Vipiteno control centre will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies, including infrared cameras, heavy vehicle scales, and diagnostic equipment capable of detecting any manipulation of tachographs or exhaust systems.

It is worth noting that a similar station has been in operation on the Austrian A10 motorway in Kuchl, approximately 250 km from Vipiteno. This state-of-the-art checkpoint, opened at the end of 2022, allows for checks on axle loads and brake conditions, among other things.
