New weighing system will catch overloaded trucks in Italy

After the disaster in Genoa, where a bridge collapsed in August last year, the Italian road administrator Anas initiated a project that would determine the gross weight of trucks and control the flow of traffic.

The project of the Italian operator is supposed to prevent tragedies similar to the one that took place in Genoa. The new system will determine if road infrastructure in Italy is not put to extensive pressure.

The system, which is a key element of the project, will enable dynamic weighing of heavy goods vehicles and catching those that are overloaded. It has been implemented on the A2 motorway from Salerno to Reggio di Calabria in the south of Italy. According to the project, this technology is to be used at intersections close to bridges and bypasses, reports the verkehrsrundschau.de transport portal. The operator wants to focus primarily on sections considered sensitive due to altitude or special environmental factors and climatic conditions.

Controlling traffic

Currently, work is underway to develop and implement a technology that, along with existing systems, will allow forecasting and traffic control. In case of high intensity, traffic will be directed to alternative routes, especially when the infrastructure is not suitable for such a large number of vehicles.
