In Austria, regulations impose on drivers the obligation to use winter tyres and to carry and use snow chains. Road conditions in this Alpine country are very difficult at the moment, which is why the local police emphasize the importance of this requirement for road safety.

In the period from November 1 to April 15, on the Austrian roads, you can only drive „on winter roads”. Heavy goods vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes should have winter tyres on at least one axle. They must have the markings M&S, M+S, MS, M.S., M/S, M-S and tread with a depth of at least 5 mm, and in the case of diagonal tires 6 mm.

In addition, from November 1 to April 15, drivers in Austria must carry snow chains for at least two tyres on the drive axle. They should use them on roads covered with snow and ice.

Failure to comply with the above requirements may result in fines up to EUR 5,000.

You can find current information on roads where you can only move with snow chains on the website of the Austrian automobile club ÖAMTC by searching the following phrase: „aktive Schneekettenpflichten” (as in the graphic below).
