Police officers in the Bavarian district of Donauwörth have talked of their amazement at coming across a speeding HGV with no front number plate and fake police sirens mounted on the roof. The driver of the lorry is now set to be fined well over €1,000 and faces several charges.

According to a press release by the Schwaben Nord police department, officers spotted the offending truck while on patrol on the A25 motorway on Monday.

Between Großssorheim and Harburg, at around 2.48pm, the blue Scania was seen traveling uphill at a significantly excessive speed. The driver had removed the front licence plate and also installed two blue police-like sirens on the roof of his driver’s cab.

The police found that the truck had reached a peak speed of 100 km/h and hit 95km/h on numerous occasions.

When explaining his actions to the police, the 24-year-old driver of the HGV said he was under great time pressure to complete an urgent delivery. He therefore decided to mount the sirens and remove his front licence plate to avoid his registration being photographed by speed cameras.

Police estimate the fine for the driver’s violations will amount to €1,400. Besides the fine, the driver will also face charges for a number of offences including licence plate misuse. To make matters worse, it was found that the 24-year-old had already had his licence revoked for a series of other road traffic violations.

Before the vehicle could continue its journey, the registration plate naturally had to be reattached and the imitation police sirens removed.
