The survey, the results of which have only recently been made public, was conducted last summer of 2022. The study looked into the attitudes and opinions of Finnish motorists.
One of the findings highlighted by the Finnish Road Safety Council is that 71% of respondents said they at least sometimes drive at too high a speed when passing a lorry in a 80 km/h speed limit zone on the motorway.
Moreover, 1 in 7 said that they try to pass a lorry as quickly as possible – even when the view is poor or roadmarks indicate overtaking is prohibited.
“If overtaking requires breaking the speed limit, you should think about whether there is a need for overtaking at all,” said Finnish Road Safety Council spokesperson Toni Vuoristo in a press release.
The Finnish Road Safety Council was also keen to stress to motorists that when overtaking, it is essential to take others into account by ensuring a sufficient safety distance.
