Holiday truck traffic bans in Europe

In some European countries, summer traffic bans are in force. In Bulgaria, they have already started, and in Poland they will start at the end of June. In most other countries, restrictions have been in force since July.

Austria – Tyrol

In Tyrol, in accordance with the 409th Ordinance of the Ministry of Climate, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, additional traffic restrictions for trucks over 7.5 t will apply on the A12, A13 and A14 motorways during the summer.

The bans apply according to the following schedule:

  • Every Saturday from 7 June to 27 September 2025, a traffic ban from 07:00 to 15:00 applies to trucks and vehicle combinations with a GVW of over 7.5 t on the A12 Inntal Autobahn, A13 Brenner Autobahn, A14 Rheintal/Walgau Autobahn. The restriction only applies to vehicles travelling on the A13 section from the Nößlach junction to the Brenner Nord junction (direction Italy).
  •  Every Saturday from 5 July to 30 August 2025 from 07:00 to 15:00 on the A13 Brenner Autobahn – from the Italian border to the Nößlach junction. The ban applies to vehicles over 7.5 t and combinations over 7.5 t, if the route runs via the Brenner Nord-Nößlach section towards Innsbruck.

The ban does not apply to, among others:

  • Urgent or special transports, such as: live animals for slaughter, postal items,  press, drinks in tourist areas, urgent deliveries to petrol stations, restaurants, events, refrigerated truck repairs, roadside assistance, crisis services.
  • Combined transport (rail–road or water–road) between the consignor/consignee and the nearest loading/unloading station (with appropriate documentation).
  • Humanitarian convoys and the transit of foreign armed forces legally present in Austria.

Bulgaria

Summer traffic bans in Bulgaria start on 1 June and last until 15 September. They apply to vehicles with a GVW of over 12 tonnes and are in force on some routes:

  • on Fridays from 17:00 to 20:00,
  • on Sundays from 14:00 to 20:00.

The Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, summer traffic bans apply to trucks and vehicle combinations with a GVW of over 7.5 tonnes and are in force from 1 July to 31 August. They apply to motorways, expressways and first-class roads:

  • on Fridays from 17:00 to 21:00,
  • on Saturdays from 07:00 to 13:00,
  • on Sundays and other summer holidays from 13:00 to 22:00.

France

Traffic bans in France apply to trucks and vehicle combinations with a GVW of over 7.5 tonnes (except for special vehicles and agricultural vehicles). This year’s summer restrictions will apply from 07:00 to 19:00 on the following Saturdays:

  • 5, 12, 19 and 26 July,
  • 2, 16 and 23 August.

Germany

From 1 July to 31 August, on Saturdays between 07:00 and 20:00, trucks will not be allowed to drive on some motorways and federal roads in Germany. The restrictions apply to trucks with a permissible gross vehicle weight of over 7.5 tonnes and trucks with trailers intended for commercial transport of goods. If truck drivers do not comply with the bans, both they and their vehicle owners can expect fines of between €25 and €150.

Poland

Vehicles and combinations of heavy goods vehicles with a permissible total weight exceeding 12 tonnes are covered by holiday traffic bans in Poland. They apply:

  • on Fridays from 18:00 to 22:00,
  • on Saturdays from 08:00 to 14:00,
  • on Sundays from 08:00 to 22:00.

The traffic ban for trucks lasts from the end of the school year, i.e. this year from 27 June, until the last Sunday before the start of classes in schools (i.e. until 31 August this year).

“These restrictions exempt certain groups of vehicles, such as trucks carrying perishable goods, medicines and medical supplies, fuels and live animals, as well as vehicles taking part in rescue and humanitarian operations and those helping to remove breakdowns or the effects of natural disasters. Traffic bans do not apply to buses either,” informs the Chief Inspectorate of Road Transport.

GITD adds that traffic restrictions do not apply to:

  • vehicles returning from abroad to complete road transport or to the recipient of the transported cargo based in the territory of the Republic of Poland;
  • vehicles that entered the territory of the Republic of Poland outside the dates or hours of the ban, within a distance of 50 km from the place of crossing the border;
  • waiting at the border to leave the territory of the Republic of Poland.

For violating the traffic ban in Poland, a driver may be fined from PLN 200 (approx. €46.77) to PLN 500 (approx. €116.93), and a carrier may be fined PLN 2,000 (approx. €467.72). A fine of PLN 1,000 (approx. €233.86) may also be imposed on the transport manager in the company.

Romania

Additional summer traffic restrictions for trucks over 7.5 t in Romania are in force from 1 July to 31 August:

On the A2 motorway:

  • from Bucharest to Constanța on Fridays from 12:00 to 22:00 and Saturdays from 06:00 to 22:00,
  • from Constanța to Bucharest on Sundays from 06:00 to 22:00.

On national road DN39 (Agigea – Mangalia) in both directions:

  • on Saturdays and Sundays from 06:00 to 22:00.

Slovakia

From 1 July to 31 August, traffic restrictions for vehicles with GVW above 7.5 t are in force on Saturdays from 07:00 to 19:00.

Slovenia

In addition to regular Sunday restrictions from 08:00 to 22:00, in Slovenia heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 t are subject to traffic bans on Saturdays from 08:00 to 13:00 – from the last weekend in June to the first weekend in September.

Hungary

Throughout July and August, there will be traffic restrictions in Hungary for vehicles with a GVW of over 7.5 t on the following days:

  • from Saturday from 15:00 to Sunday 22:00,
  • from 22:00 on the eve of a holiday until 22:00 on the day of the holiday.

Hungarian traffic bans apply to the following routes:

  • M7 motorway,
  • national road no. 2, Budapest-Parassapuszta,
  • bus 2A,
  • national road no. 6, Dunaújváros-Budapest,
  • national road no. 7,
  • national road no. 10, Dorog-Budapest,
  • national road no. 11, Esztergom-Budapest,
  • national road no. 12,
  • national road no. 1201,
  • national road No. 51 from the intersection with national road No. 510 to Dömsöd,
  • national road No. 71,
  • national road No. 76 between the intersection of national road 71 with road No. 7 and between Zalaapáti and national road No. 71,
  • national road no. 55, Alsónyék-Baja,
  • national road 82 – from national road no. 8 to Veszprémvársány,
  • national road No. 84 from Sümeg to national road No. 71,
  • national road no. 33, Dormánd-Debrecen,
  • national road no. 86, Jánossomorja-Nemesböd and Körmend-Zalabaksa,
  • national road No. 37, Miskolc-Sátoraljaújhely from the intersection of national road No. 38 to the intersection with national road No. 37 to Rakamaz.

Italy

During the summer in Italy, in addition to the Sunday traffic bans from 07:00 to 22:00, there are also holiday restrictions on Saturdays and Fridays.

The movement of trucks with a GVW of over 7.5 t on Italian roads will be prohibited during the summer months on the following days:
