Scania recently announced its most recent eco-friendly milestone, with the launch of the new biogas engines.

Scania teased its new biogas engines at the previous IAA fair, and upon their arrival, they brought an unexpected twist – they are now integrated with two-thirds of the successful Super-based powertrain. This well-coordinated trio, comprising the new biogas engines, G25 gear-boxes, and axles from the diesel sibling, operates seamlessly, leading to confirmed fuel savings of 5% during long-haul journeys.

Ola Henriksson, Senior Product Manager for Renewable Fuels at Scania Trucks, declared: “Pairing these components revealed the potential for a highly efficient system. Similar to how the Super engine benefits from the increased spread in the G25 gearbox, the biogas engines, when paired with the Scania Opticruise gearbox and new axles, consistently operate close to their 'sweet spot.’ The result is a 5% fuel saving from this powertrain.”

The demand for locally produced biomethane fuels for trucks, like Bio-LNG or Bio-CNG, is rising rapidly. Companies and transport buyers aim to decarbonize their road transports immediately. Biomethane-based solutions are readily available through expanding fuel-station networks, offering up to a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions from a well-to-wheel perspective.

Henriksson emphasizes, “Biomethane fuels are undoubtedly the solution for customers eager to embark on a decarbonization journey promptly. Our biogas engines cater to various industries and applications. A 40-tonne tractor-and-trailer combination can achieve ranges of up to 1,800 km with the largest Bio-LNG tank solutions. Combine this with the 460 hp and 2,300 Nm our OC13 engine offers, and you have an ideal tool for European long-hauls.”

The successful pairing of Scania’s new biogas engines with the Super-based powertrain components results in a confirmed 5% fuel saving. With Bio-LNG or Bio-CNG, there’s a potential CO2 reduction of up to 90%, providing an effective solution for immediate implementation.

Biogas filling station networks are expanding across Europe, propelled by heightened demand and major players in the fuel industry. Reducing the CO2 footprint is no longer limited to 'green’ companies seeking public acclaim; it’s a necessity for serious transporters, utilizing every available means.

These new biogas engines build upon Scania’s renowned 13-litre gas engine, showcasing increased power levels and readiness for future legal requirements. Scania is committed to securing a larger market share in the pursuit of decarbonization.
