Volvo targets longer-haul electric work with 700 km truck and new 13-litre engines

Volvo Trucks has set out the timetable for its next generation of powertrains, pairing a new 13-litre diesel and gas engine platform with longer-range battery-electric models.

The Swedish manufacturer announced the line-up on 12 May 2026, describing it as the result of a multi-billion SEK investment in both combustion and electric drivelines. Sales of the new 13-litre engines are due to start in the third quarter of 2026, while a new battery-electric heavy-duty model with a quoted range of up to 700 km will enter production the same year.

The combustion engines will initially be built in Skövde, Sweden. Trucks fitted with them will be assembled in Tuve, Sweden, and Ghent, Belgium. The next-generation electric trucks will be produced in Gothenburg and Ghent.

The combustion programme is built around a new 13-litre platform shared by two engines: the diesel D13 and the gas-powered G13. The D13 will be offered with 380–560 hp and 1,800–2,900 Nm of torque. The G13 will cover 420–500 hp and 2,400–2,800 Nm.

Volvo says the new platform can deliver up to 4% lower fuel consumption than the engine it replaces. The figure is based on a simulation of a Volvo FH 4×2 tractor with a 500 hp D13 engine at 35 tonnes gross combination weight, using Cruise Control, I-See and I-Roll with engine stop/start in representative European driving conditions. The comparison is with the previous standard D13 eSCR engine.

Actual savings will depend on vehicle specification, load, route, driving style, maintenance and weather.

The platform also brings a refined engine brake, redesigned cylinders and turbo, and an updated version of Volvo’s I-Shift transmission. More diesel variants will be compatible with I-Roll engine stop/start, which switches the engine off when the truck is coasting downhill.

The engines meet Euro 6 and the new NNR3 noise rules, known as New Noise Regulation Phase 3. Volvo says they are also designed to accommodate further legislative steps. They will be available in the FM, FMX, FH and FH Aero ranges.

From launch, the platform is approved for renewable diesel, including HVO and B100 biodiesel. The gas variant is approved for biogas and bio-LNG. Volvo also lists green hydrogen as a future fuel for the same platform, with hydrogen combustion engines currently undergoing public-road testing and scheduled for commercial launch before 2030.

The rollout will begin in Europe, Morocco, Turkey and India, followed by North America, Asia and South Africa.

Electric range extended to 700 km

On the electric side, Volvo is adding a new long-range heavy-duty model with a quoted range of up to 700 km on a single charge. The company has not yet disclosed full charging, pricing or market-by-market availability details in the release.

Volvo says its wider electric truck range is also being updated. The manufacturer currently offers eight battery-electric truck models and says it has sold more than 6,000 electric trucks in more than 50 countries since entering serial production in 2019.

The new electric models will roll out from 2026.
