On August 21, 2023, new trucks will have to be equipped with a second-generation intelligent tachograph. This device is to help enforce the provisions of the Mobility Package and is to record, inter alia, crossing the border and the period of loading and unloading. The device will also allow for remote monitoring thanks to the DSRC technology (dedicated short-range communication).
Importantly, the period of driver activity data will be extended from 28 to 56 days. The new functionalities of the smart tachograph are to be met by increased capabilities of the card the devices read.
This means that the arrival of the smart tacho 2 requires new cards with enough memory to hold 56 days of driver activity data. According to the new EU regulations, new driver cards will allow for the storage of the following information:
- the last 12 events of each type (i.e. 132 event types),
- the last 24 faults of each type (i.e. 48 faults),
- additional data on places where daily work periods begin or end, to be entered by the driver,
- vehicle position data where the accumulated driving time reaches a multiple of three hours.
The new tachograph card will also allow you to save the following border crossing data:
- the country the vehicle is leaving,
- the country the vehicle is entering,
- date and time of crossing the vehicle border crossing,
- vehicle position after crossing the border,
- GNSS accuracy,
- a flag indicating whether the item has been authenticated,
- odometer reading.
Moreover, the second generation tachograph driver cards will allow the storage of the following loading or unloading data:
- type of operation (loading, unloading or simultaneous loading / unloading).
- date and time of the loading / unloading operation
- vehicle position,
- GNSS accuracy, date and time of position determination,
- a flag indicating whether the item has been authenticated,
- odometer reading.
