In the port of Duisburg, a modern, digital parking lot for trucks will soon be opened. This solution aims to improve traffic organization in one of Europe's most important logistics hubs and reduce the problem of illegal parking in the area.

The new truck parking is located on the site of the former Triton shipyard, directly within the Duisburg port area. On an area of approximately 21,000 sqm, over 100 parking spaces have been prepared, and drivers will have access to sanitary facilities and social rooms. This addresses the long-standing problem of insufficient safe parking spaces for trucks in the port region. The parking is in close proximity to the Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT), the largest container terminal in the European hinterland, which operates fully digitally as of 2024. Connecting the new parking with the terminal’s slot management system will allow for more efficient planning of truck arrivals and departures.

The project was implemented as part of SEGATE (“Sensorik und Kommunikationssysteme zur Parkraumüberwachung und terminalseitigen Zu- und Ablaufsteuerung im Duisburger Hafen”). Supported by the German Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport, the project demonstrates how modern technologies can support the daily work of drivers and improve processes in international logistics.

The ceremonial opening of the parking lot is scheduled for next Tuesday – August 26, 2025.

Smart parking with sensors and scanners

The new system is based on so-called telematically controlled truck parking. Upon entering, drivers provide vehicle data and the planned departure time, and the system assigns them a specific spot. The parking lot is equipped with laser scanners that monitor space occupation and ensure proper use of the facility.

Thanks to this solution, optimal use of space is possible – vehicles are arranged in the order of planned departures, allowing for up to one-third more trucks to be accommodated than with traditional solutions. In total, the facility can accommodate 89 heavy vehicles and 28 tractor units.

Benefits for drivers and local residents

The new infrastructure will provide drivers with access to well-lit and monitored parking spaces as well as free sanitary facilities and showers. The parking will be supervised 24/7, increasing safety for both drivers and transported loads.

For residents of nearby districts, this means a reduction in the problem of wild truck parking near residential estates and blocking local streets.
