Temporary suspension of the regulations governing cabotage. Germans need help from abroad to remove timber after windstorms

After several windstorms, which hit Germany in recent months, German transport companies do not keep up with removing the wood from the forest. The Federal Office of Freight Transport (BAG) informs about the temporary, regional suspension of the regulations governing cabotage.

Windstorms Burglind, Herwart, Ksawery and Fryderyk caused enormous damage to the German forests. As reported by BAG, domestic companies are not able to transport such quantities of timber. If it is not exported soon, it is in danger of losing value. It will be attacked by pests that can start an epidemic in the remaining parts of the forests.

Suspension of controls and sanctions related to cabotage

In connection with the above, the offices authorized to control and sanction offences related to road transport of goods were instructed to refrain from prosecuting and sanctioning carriers for violation of the regulations governing cabotage until 31 July this year. Failure to comply with the obligation to hold a permit will not be punished either.

These guidelines apply only to specific regions and transports of uncut wood, sawn timber, and special log transports. The offices will require a copy of the contract between the client and the carrier and accompanying documents. In addition, the rules on driver’s working time and rest, posting of workers, fixing and securing the cargo, its dimensions and weight should be followed.
