According to the forecast of the Federal Office of Freight Transport (BAG), road transport in Germany will continue to grow in the next three years.

The BAG prepared a document at the request of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). The medium-term forecast covers the years from 2018 to 2021.

The volume of road transport in the current year will increase by 1 percent compared to 2017, while freight turnover will record a 1.4 percent increase – informs BAG.

In the coming years, the growth rate will be much lower – in 2017, in Germany, trucks transported 2.3 percent more goods than in 2016 (3561,2 million tonnes). However, as estimated by the German office, in 2021, road transport of goods will record only 0.2 percent increase compared to 2018.

The transport of goods in Germany has exceeded the ministry’s expectations

Although the dynamics of growth anticipated for the coming years have considerably weakened, it is worth looking at the older forecasts commissioned by the German Ministry of Transport.

In 2014, BMVI published a document predicting that road transport of goods will increase between 2010 and 2030 by almost 17 percent. Accordingly, in 2030, it was to reach a volume of 3,639.1 million tonnes.

It turns out, however, that such an increase in road transport in Germany was not observed after 20, but only after 7 years. Already last year, this result was exceeded and reached a ceiling of 3,642.9 million tons. In 2021, the volume of freight transport is to reach 3,705,7 million tons.
