A 44-year-old truck driver has been found guilty of a slew of violations, resulting in a huge fine of €39,500 for himself and a €118,500 penalty for his employer.

The Romanian driver’s violations were discovered after he was subject to an inspection in July of last year by the Kirchroth motorway police station in Germany.

During the check, officers noticed that the data taken from the tachograph did not match the kilometers traveled and the time required for the journey. The police suspected that the trucker must have used another driver’s card.

Thanks to a fuel card found in the truck cabin, the investigators were then able to work out exactly where the Romanian had refueled. On the basis of a CCTV recording at a petrol station in Austria, it was possible to prove a time window in which the driver had actually been on the road with his vehicle, despite him using a different driver’s card in the tachograph.

Inspectors then discovered many other violations of law in relation to the trucker’s work. The entire investigation lasted around eight months and ultimately resulted in heavy fines for both the truck driver and the road transport company who employed him. The lorry driver has to pay €39,500, while the transport company has been fined €118,500.
