The end of analogue tachographs is fast approaching. They will be replaced by so-called intelligent tachographs that will be equipped with the GPS and enable wireless remote data reading. The German Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) reveals what information the tachograph will provide during the remote control.

From June 15, 2019, each new vehicle performing transport services within the European Union will have to be equipped with the so-called intelligent tachograph. The device will have a built-in GPS location that will allow you to record the exact position of the vehicle at the start and end of driving, as well as every 3 hours while the vehicle is in motion. In addition, there will be the possibility of faster and wireless reading of some data by the control services.

The Federal Office for Freight Transport (BAG) explains in a statement what kind of information the tachograph will provide during a remote control performed by the office, reports the eurotransport.de portal.

Remote reading of the driving time not possible

As BAG emphasizes, due to technical reasons, there is no way to check wirelessly the driving time and rest periods recorded in the tachograph. Nevertheless, pursuant to art. 9 par. 4 of Regulation (EU) No 165/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council on tachographs used in road transport, only data necessary for the purpose of targeted roadside checks on vehicles whose tachograph has been manipulated or misused may be sent. According to BAG, this information must relate to specific registered events or data, such as:

– the last attempt to breach security,

– the longest power outage,

– sensor fault,

– speed or route data error,

– data conflict related to vehicle movement,

– driving without a valid card,

– inserting the card while driving,

– time settings data,

– calibration data (including the dates of the last two calibrations),

– vehicle registration number,

– speed recorded by the tachograph.

The above information should be sufficient to detect the tachograph which has been manipulated. The remote control will not result in imposing a fine on the driver or transport company when irregularities are detected. On the basis of the data obtained this way, the competent control body will be able to direct the given vehicle to stationary control. Only after a thorough examination, the officers will be able to start procedures related to the imposition of appropriate financial penalties.
